The Undeterrable & Ever Vigilant Vanguard
'With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably' - Captain Jean-Luc Picard
One year into the Dominion War, Starfleet handed Starbase Vanguard over to the Federation Civilian Defense Authority to look after her until the war ended. Over two decades later... after being all but abandoned... Starfleet has returned to reclaim her. A base was needed for the SFMC and Vanguard was the perfect location.
SB Vanguard is a simulation in Theta Fleet that explores the darker, edgier sides to Star Trek that aren't very often touched upon. If you're new to simming or a veteran Trekkie... come along and join us for a journey through a different side of Star Trek!

So, a relatively quiet month this time around but still with some remarkable posts being put out there!
Silver Unit of Distinction - this month saw us achieve the silver UoD for TF23. Considering it's been such a quiet month I think we should be really happy with this! We can't always get gold! Well done, all!
James filled in the monthly report this month and has sneakily nominated me for Writer of the Month which, for some bizarre reason, I won! He had this to say:
Writer of the Month:
Task Force 23 (tie):
Vanguard: Colonel Horatio Drake played by Jamie. The XO said: I have decided to complete the Monthly Report myself this month so we can recognize Jamie for how in depth and how good his posts are as Horatio Drake. This month he is running a mission to explore the USS Bretagne, whilst contending with a betrayal that happened at the previous mission with his XO and Drake's own hate for Starfleet. Jamie consistently shows Drake's state of mind in all his posts and ensures all posts are as highly detailed as possible.
Lastly, and a surprising one, is CO of the Quarter.
CO of the Quarter:
Task Force 23: Horatio Drake, Starbase Vanguard
This quarter, Starbase Vanguard has been at the top of its game. Much of this is due to its Commanding Officer. Not only is there a lot of mission-related posting going on, there is also a thriving civilian sector on the Starbase. There are some great writers and great posts on the sim as well.
Whilst this is very kind of them, I disagree with the fact that the success of this sim has more to do with me than anyone else on this sim and it's something that I talk about all the time. I was asked the other day by a new CO to the fleet, 'how have you made Vanguard so successful?'. My response was that I haven't done anything. I had an idea for a Marine Starbase years ago which turned into Protector... this is just an evolution of that. What makes this sim so utterly amazing and unique and brilliant is the incredible writers we have on board. The writers who talk about intricate details, the writers who have created merchants and shops and gardens, who run bars, who run infirmaries, who write posts with the biggest range of original ideas and exciting stories that I have ever seen in 14 years of simming. It is truly you who have made this sim what it is... I'm just glad to be a part of it!
Everyone will be receiving the Silver UoD this month on their service records as well as the CO's Merit award.

So, thanks for the recent debate on saluting - I found it interesting and a bit of an eye opener getting other viewpoints on it. Going forward, I think we'll drop Google Group and it clearly just doesn't work properly! We'll find a new forum for any further discussions.
I think the consensus was a NO to saluting but a YES to standing to attention, given the proper occasion. I think we'll probably be doing it less than the modern day military do, but using it nevertheless.

Welcome to Captain Gunnar (played by David) who joins us as our new Brigade Commanding Officer, leading up the Marine Detachment on board. David comes with a wealth of experience and has a rather interesting character!

Hello, all--Just letting you know that, my second short story publication appeared in a YA fantasy anthology called Dragons and Witches: Fairy-Tale Villains Reimagined. It's available on Amazon. No real dragons were harmed during the writing of this book, but I did mess with my fictional dragon some...
I was also installed as Worthy Matron of my Eastern Star chapter on June 10 and have already presided over my first meeting. Only 11 more to go! This is why I've been a bit scarce lately.

Apologies the awards are a bit late this month!
Once again, Vanguard is bursting at the seams with awards! Some of you will remember the days of SB Protector and the fun we had on it. When I came back to simming, those funs times were what I was determined to recreate, I wanted to make that diverse starbase simming environment once again. I knew it wouldn't be possible without a few individuals and I was lucky enough to have another opportunity to write with these remarkable players who took Vanguard and effortlessly breathed life into her. We have surpassed what we had on Protector to the power of, at least, ten. This is only made possible because of all of you. The only reason we keep getting awards is because of you. All I can say is keep it up and I hope you're having as much fun as I am!
So, onto the awards!
I am so proud to announce that, once again, we have received the Gold Unit of Distinction for Task Force 23!!! Award image is already up.
We are also lucky enough to have, within our midst, the successful winner of Writer of the Month! Well done to Tom!
Writer of the Month
Task Force 23 (tie):
Vanguard: I think this has to go to Lieutenant Thomas Maynard, played by Tom. Tom has come out with some really good introduction posts this month, being new to the sim, in a fairly difficult department to play. He's established the character and started to hint at his past, all with well written and interesting posts!
Lieutenant Thomas Maynard - Distinguished Newcomer Award
Further to receiving Writer of the Month, I think Tom has really made his mark coming onto Vanguard with his excellent opening posts and willingness to jump into JP's with anyone willing! Keep up the good work!
Commander Zachary Hunt - Matt Jeffries Volunteer Award
Matt Jeffries was, of course, the set designer for ST:TOS, so I think this is an apt award for James. James goes above and beyond with the maintenance and upkeep of the Vanguard website, always looking for ways to improve things or change things up a bit. Without the site, none of what we have would be possible.
Commander Zachary Hunt - 50 Posts
James has now met the 50 post mark on Vanguard
Lieutenant Commander Chlamydia Addams - Department Distinction Award: Science
In all my years of simming I've never known a medical department to be brought so alive! CMO isn't the easiest position to play, but Jenny takes it in her stride throwing in as much true science as possible. She truly owns the medical department on SB Vanguard.
Lieutenant Commander Paul Graves - 100 Posts
Chantal has now met the 100 post mark on Vanguard
Jade Lantz - 100 Posts
Susan has now met the 100 post mark on Vanguard
That wraps up this month, folks! Well done to everyone who received an award this month but also well done to everyone for creating something amazing!
